What time is the Liturgy?
Our Sunday services begin with the Orthros (Matins) service at 9:00 AM followed by the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom at 10:00 AM. On weekday holidays Divine Liturgy usually begins at 9:30 AM. Please check our worship schedule for more details.

When is Easter?
Easter Sunday for the year 2009 is April 19th.

The Great Lent begins Monday, March 2nd, 2009.

When is the feast day of Saint Sophia?
The name of our cathedral is a translation of "Hagia Sophia" (Agia Sofia), which means Holy Wisdom. In the words of Saint Paul,

For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. (1 Cor 1.23-25)

By tradition the feast day of churches of the Holy Wisdom is the Monday following Pentecost, the Monday of the Holy Spirit, which will be June 12, 2006.

Our next Greek Festival will be held May 16-18, 2008.

When is the office open?
The Cathedral Office is open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Mondays through Saturdays.

Where is the Cathedral located?
The Cathedral is located on the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and 36th Street, NW, one block east of the intersection of Wisconsin and Massachusetts Avenues. See Map & Directions for more details.

What is the Cathedral near?
Saint Sophia Cathedral is in a neighborhood of churches, embassies, and schools, about a fifteen-minute drive from the National Mall. Nearby are many sites of interest to visitors: Dumbarton Oaks (Harvard's Center for Byzantine Studies), The Greek Embassy, The Naval Observatory and Vice-President's Residence, Washington National Cathedral The American University, and The National Zoological Park.
