Overview

Under the skillful guidance of Stelios Kontakiotis, the Saint Sophia choir chants the beautiful hymns that enrich the spiritual experience of Saint Sophia. Succeeding previous Master Chanter and Choir Director Harilaos Papapostolou (+1998) who served the Cathedral for more than 25 years, Mr. Kontakiotis graduated from the Conservatory of Athens and emigrated to the US in 2000. Under his careful study and guidance, the Cathedral Choir chants according to the authentic Byzantine style that surrounds parishioners during the service. Given the changing demographics of the Cathedral’s members, services at Saint Sophia are performed in both Greek and English to make the entire liturgy accessible to the entire congregation.

Choir Rehearsals

Choir rehearsals are held in the Cathedral auditorium on Thursday nights from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. New members are welcome to attend. Knowledge of Greek is not necessary as the scores include phonetic pronunciations. The choir chants every Sunday during the Divine Liturgy and during major feast days.
